Now Offering Lithium-Ion Hybrid Battery Replacements

Apr 10, 2025

At Hybrid Battery 911, we're proud to announce the expansion of our hybrid battery services to now include reconditioned lithium-ion (Li-ion) hybrid battery replacements, in addition to our trusted nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) hybrid battery solutions. This upgrade allows us to offer more flexible, affordable, and efficient hybrid battery replacement options for today’s hybrid vehicle owners.

A Brief History of Hybrid Battery Technology

Since the late 1990s, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) have primarily relied on two types of battery technologies: Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) and Lithium-Ion (Li-ion). NiMH batteries became mainstream with the debut of the Toyota Prius in 2001 and have long been valued for their durability and reliability. Around 2015, automakers began shifting toward Li-ion battery technology in hybrid vehicles, beginning with select Toyota Prius models. This industry-wide transition has been driven by the superior energy density, lighter weight, and compact size of Li-ion batteries.

Comparing NiMH and Li-ion Hybrid Batteries

Both NiMH and Li-ion batteries are used in hybrid vehicles, but they feature distinct characteristics:

  • NiMH Hybrid Batteries: Built using a hydrogen-absorbing alloy for the negative electrode and nickel oxyhydroxide for the positive electrode. Known for their safety, longevity, and resilience, NiMH batteries are heavier and have a lower energy density compared to Li-ion batteries.
  • Li-ion Hybrid Batteries: These utilize modern lithium chemistries that offer greater power density, reduced weight, and enhanced fuel economy. However, they require advanced battery management systems (BMS) to monitor safety, charge levels, and longevity.

Breakthroughs in Lithium-Ion Battery Diagnostics and Repair

Working with NuVant Systems, Hybrid Battery 911 is proud to support the launch of the revolutionary LVc-40—a cutting-edge diagnostic and reconditioning tool for Li-ion hybrid and electric vehicle batteries. Developed from research at Northeastern University, the LVc-40 enables precise diagnostics, repair, and battery cell balancing, ensuring maximum performance and extending the lifespan of reconditioned Li-ion batteries.

Who Offers Lithium-Ion Hybrid Battery Replacements?

As a cost-effective and environmentally responsible alternative to OEM hybrid battery replacements, Hybrid Battery 911 now offers remanufactured lithium-ion batteries for popular hybrid models. Our initial inventory includes:

  • Toyota Prius Hybrid
  • Toyota Camry Hybrid
  • Ford Fusion Hybrid

Additional makes and models will be added later this year. Each hybrid battery undergoes a comprehensive reconditioning and testing process, ensuring high performance, safety, and reliability—at a lower price point than OEM replacements.

How to Identify Your Hybrid Battery Type

Knowing whether your hybrid uses a nickel-metal hydride battery or a lithium-ion battery is essential when seeking a replacement. Here are a few quick tips:

  1. Check Your Owner’s Manual – Most vehicle manuals specify the hybrid battery type.
  2. Use a VIN Decoder – Tools like the NHTSA VIN decoder can help determine your vehicle’s hybrid battery configuration.
  3. Inspect the Battery Label – Some batteries have visible labels, but accessing them may require professional help.
