Planning a long holiday road trip in your hybrid? Great idea—hybrids are fuel-efficient and perfect for covering long distances. But before you hit the road to see friends and family, consider the following fixes for your hybrid battery to ensure your hybrid gets you there without issue.

This generic warning means something is wrong with the hybrid system, which is the entire vehicle. This is a minor warning light that is saying, 'something, somewhere is malfunctioning'. You should see this warning indication along with other trouble lights, if thrown by itself, it is a minor warning that fluids are low, engine servicing is needed, etc.
Recommended Action:
It’s imperative to pull trouble codes to determine what the “Check Hybrid System” is trying to tell you, but is only possible when the check engine light is activated. You can purchase an OBD2 scanner on Amazon or visit a local establishment that can pull codes for you, which correspond to various issues with the hybrid battery. Check out our error codes page and type in your particular code to learn more.
Your car is warning you that something is happening, so continued driving without a diagnostic is not recommended. You can continue driving with a dead or failing hybrid battery, but you’ll lose many of the fuel-saving features that make a hybrid worth owning. Before a long trip, call Hybrid Battery 911 to schedule a hybrid battery inspection or replacement.

This indicates your auxiliary (12-volt) battery isn’t functioning correctly, meaning the battery is not be charging effectively. This is normally due to a defective or dying starter battery, but can also be caused by a negative draw with a failing or malfunctioning inverter.
Recommended Action:
Head to the nearest auto parts store and have your 12V battery tested. A failing inverter or weak 12V battery can leave you unable to restart your car after stopping, an extremely inconvenient issue when you’re hundreds of miles from home.

Low oil pressure can cause severe, permanent engine damage if ignored.
Recommended Action:
Pullover soon and check your oil level, adding oil if needed. If the light continues to stay on after topping off, head to a service center quickly, or tow the vehicle if it’s a long distance. Oil pressure issues are not safe to “push through” on a road trip.

This warning shows up when the engine senses overheating. Common causes include low coolant, clogged radiator passages, or failed coolant pumps/fans.
Recommended Action:
If the light is red, pull over soon to prevent overheating damage. You can inspect coolant levels under the hood, but if you are unable to resolve it yourself, or the warning remains, get professional help immediately.
