Buying a Used Hybrid Car? Here’s What You Need to Know

May 14, 2025

Did you know May is one of the busiest months for car sales? With Memorial Day promotions just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to look for a great deal on a used car. And if you're thinking about going green, hybrids are an excellent choice. They're fuel-efficient, reliable, and retain their value better than many traditional gas-powered vehicles.

But before you make that purchase, there’s one key system you need to understand: the hybrid battery.

Why the Battery Matters in a Hybrid

Every hybrid vehicle comes with a high-voltage battery that helps power the electric motor and reduce fuel consumption. These batteries are designed to last 8–10 years or more, but they do degrade over time. If you're buying a used hybrid—especially one with over 100,000 miles—it’s essential to know what condition the battery is in. A failing hybrid battery can lead to costly repairs and disappointing performance.

How to Know If the Hybrid Battery Is Failing

Here are the most common signs of a battery that’s on its way out:

  • Sluggish acceleration: If the vehicle feels unusually slow, the battery may not be delivering enough power to the electric motor.
  • Increased fan noise: Loud or constantly running battery fans could mean the battery is overheating.
  • Poor fuel economy: A drop in MPG often points to the hybrid system not functioning properly.
  • Erratic battery gauge: If the dashboard battery indicator jumps from full to empty and back again, that’s a sign of imbalance.
  • Warning lights: Hybrid system alerts, check engine lights, or a red triangle symbol should not be ignored.
  • Gas engine running more frequently: If the engine kicks in more often, the battery may not be supporting the drive system effectively.

If you notice any of these, it’s time to have the battery tested before buying—or even continuing to drive.

Watch Out for Code Clearing

One shady tactic used by sellers is code clearing. This is when someone resets the onboard computer to erase error codes, making it seem like the car is problem-free. But once you drive the car for a few days, those same codes—and the real problems—can return.

Ask the seller to show you a diagnostic scan that includes historic (stored) trouble codes. These don’t always show up on the dashboard but can reveal battery issues that were recently cleared.

Smart Questions to Ask the Seller

  • Is the hybrid battery the original? This will determine how old the battery is.
  • How long has the car been sitting? Hybrids work better when they are being driven. Sitting more than a few weeks is bad for the battery.
  • When was it last tested? Try to get a copy of the report and ensure it's recent.
  • Are there any stored or recent trouble codes? Ensure that the codes were not just cleared from the computer, and the root cause of the code was fixed.
  • Is the battery under any kind of warranty? Most new hybrids come with an 8-year OEM warranty, and after that, it's usually not covered for failure.
  • Has any work been done on the hybrid system? Other hybrid system parts failing, like brake actuators or the ECU having recently failed, could be a sign of hybrid battery issues.

These questions will help you understand what you're getting into and avoid buying someone else’s problem.

Battery Replacement: New vs. Remanufactured

If you do end up needing a battery replacement—either now or in the near future—you don’t always have to go back to the dealership.

New OEM batteries are the most expensive option but come with long warranties.

Remanufactured batteries, when sourced from a trusted provider, can offer excellent reliability and performance at a significantly lower cost. They're a smart way to extend the life of your hybrid without breaking the bank.
